Plant Protection Products
Plant Protection Products (PPPs, also referred to as 'pesticides') are product containing one or more active substances, intended to protect crops by preventing attacks by harmful organism ('pest') or diseases. They may also contain other components including safeners and synergists.
PPPs include herbicides, fungicides, insecticides, acaricides, growth regulators and repellents.
Currently, Regulation (EC) No 1107/2009 is the legislation in force concerning the placing of PPPs on the European Union market: it lays down new rules and procedures for the evaluation and authorization of active substances and PPPs.
The authorization of a PPP is a two-step process, where EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) first evaluates active substances and, after the approval, European Member states can authorize products containing those active substances, in close cooperation with each other and with the European Commission.
