REACH
When we talk about REACH, we are referring to a precise European regulation (in fact, it is formally incorrect to talk about the REACH directive or REACH legislation). The legislative reference of REACH is Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 for the Registration, Evaluation, and Authorisation of Chemicals concerning the management of substances, including their safe use.
The REACH Regulation was created with the aim of improving the protection of human health and the environment through better knowledge of the intrinsic properties of chemicals, involving manufacturers, importers and users. For example, one of the most important obligations on manufacturers and importers is REACH registration, which obliges them to register every substance they manufacture or import, providing the European Chemical Agency (ECHA) with information on the physicochemical, toxicological and ecotoxicological properties of chemicals.
Therefore, all companies that manufacture, import or distribute chemicals are subject to this Regulation in order to avoid heavy administrative penalties and the non-marketing of their products. Indeed, the supply chain is becoming increasingly demanding and attentive (including end consumers) to the safety of chemicals and their legal compliance.
It is important to emphasise the connection between REACH and CLP; in fact, these two regulations often have to be considered together.
