Alert - Published the compositional requirements for some active substances for the production of biocidal products during COVID-19 emergency
ECHA published a short document recommending the compositional requirements that the active substances should have in order to be efficient
Due to COVID-19 pandemy, the need for effective and safe disinfectant products on the market in Europe has hugely increased. For this reason, ECHA published on April 7th 2020 a short document recommending the compositional requirements that the active substances "active chlorine released from hypochlorite of sodium”,“hydrogen peroxide” and “peracetic acid” should have, notwithstanding technical equivalence (Art. 19 (1) (c)). They include for example impurity profile and content of heavy metals.
This means that suppliers of these active substances can procure or synthesize these substances without fulfilling the obligation to verify technical equivalence. However, the degree of purity and the impurity profile established in the ECHA publication must be satisfied.
The provisional authorizations according to art. 55(1) of BPR are released by National Authorities, thus ECHA recommendations should be adopted by each Member States.
