Intention for updating the harmonized classification of ethanol
Greece has presented an intention to change the harmonized classification of ethanol (CAS 64-17-5)
On 27th July, Greece presented an intention for the modification of the harmonized classification of ethanol. The intention was included in the Registry of CLH intentions until outcome. In the following table the highlights on the proposed changes:
Actual harmonized classification | Proposed harmonized classification |
---|---|
Flam Liq. H225 | Flam. Liq. 2, H225 Eye Irrit. 2, H319 Repr. 2, H361d Lact., H362 STOT SE 3, H336 STOT RE 2*, H373** |
Remember that this is only the initial step of the classification modification process. Greek Competent Authority is expected to present the official proposal by the end of the year. The proposal will then be evaluated by the ECHA Committee for Risk Assessment (RAC).
After examination, RAC will give a first opinion. Then it will open the consultation period, during which interested parties can submit comments or additional information.
Finally RAC will adopt its final opinion which will be the ground of the European Commission decision on the definitive modification of Ethanol classification.
This is the trend towards which Europe is moving, even if the process is long and everything can still change.
Considering the wide spread of the substance and the heavy implication that the adoption of the modification will have, as an example in Chemical Risk Assessment, it is recommended to control the evolution of the situation.
