Packaging and packaging waste management
There are basically two principles underlying the legislation governing the management of packaging and packaging waste:
- the one related to 'shared responsibility'
- the EU principle according to which "the polluter pays".
From these principles derive obligations for companies, the public administration and citizens. In order to fulfil the obligations of companies, CONAI (Consorzio Nazionale Imballaggi, a system of a private nature made up of companies that produce and use packaging) was created. The aim is to pursue the objectives of recovery and recycling of packaging materials laid down by European legislation.
